The uranium ores of Ningyô-tôge deposits exist in Neogene Tertiary beds of low cementation such as conglomerate, arkose, mudstone and tafaceous rocks. These ores are soft and porous, and the uranium minerals occur as fine grained crystals in the matrix of the conglomerate, on the surface of the pebbles in skin like manner, or in cracks.
These characteristics of the ores render their mechanical treatment very simple. The grade of theore can be raised several times as high simply by washing with water and screening, and quantity of theore to be treated by chemical means can be largely reduced. Besides, this will enable hydraulic mining which will greatly reduce the cost of mining and transportation.
In extracting uranium from the ores, the leaching acid is readily permeable and the contact with the uranium minerals is rapid and sufficient. The main uranium mineral of the deposits, ningyoite, is very easily soluble in acid in spite of its tetra valence of uranium. Therfore, the ores of Ningyô-tôge show higher extraction under milder conditions than the ores from oversea. Also as the amount of the carbonate minerals in the ore is negligible, the consumption of acid is small.
In Ningyô-tôge ore, there are almost no minerals which contain elements which interfere with the process of ion exchange and solvent extraction during refining. In addition to this, the yellow cake and the metallic uranium manufactured from the Ningyô-tôge ore contain smaller amount of elements which have high cross section for neutron absorption compared with the improted yellow cakes and metallic uranium manufactured there from. This, of course is due to the skill in refining, but also the mineral association of the ore plays a large role.
Recently the Atomic Fuel Corporation developed a method of direct refining, the first attempt in the world, which is to bypass the intermediate stage of manufacturing yellow cake and to produce directly UF4, of high purity. And this also can be possible only with the good quality of the.Ningyô-tôge ore.
