Description
One of the most important uranium deposits in Japan is seaimentary type, one of which deposit was discovered at Ningyo-toge located in the southwestern part of the country in 1955.Since a newly established body Atomic Fuel Corporation started prospecting in 1956, the grade, size and shape of the deposit has gradually been known. Ore reserves have also been measured year by year.
However, this deposit being conglomerate in weak formation is a rare type which has not been found in other parts of this country as well as in overseas countries. The mining of this type is not easy and stoping created some problems.
In order to overcome the difficulty and to extract are efficiently, a trial extraction of are went under way in 1959. In this venture, two methods, namely, room-and-pillar method and longwall method, using steel props and caps, which are normally in use in coal mines were applied at first. As for the first step, an examination was made on the feasibility of setting stopes in weak formations. Although it was expected that this trial would encounter some problems, the work has been smoothly proceeding ever since.
