Abstract

This paper described the digestion for the Korean monazite by sulphuric acid.Studies are undertaken in order to determine the reaction rate and optiMum conditions for extraction of thorium from this monazite. The rate curve showed to be reverse sigmoidal because of heat of reaction, and which is found to be about 0.17 kcal/g are by using a thermo-differential method. The activation energy of this digestion is about 1 kcal/mole. As indicated by their low activation energy, rate determingstep is diffusional rather than chemical process.
The optimum conditions for digestion are as follows:
Ore to acid ratio 1: 2-3
Temperature 250-300°C
Period 30 min.
Under these conditions, over 90% of thorium is extracted from monazite.
