In connection with direct electrorefining of metallic sulfide anode, fundamental studies were made to enlighten the influence of sulfur on nickel sulfide anode by the anode potential-time curve measurements and X-ray analyses.<BR>From microscopic observation and X-ary analysis it was acertained that synthesized nickel sulfide anodes showed Ni3S2+Ni (Anodes No.2, 3, 4, and 5), and Ni3S2+Ni6S5+x (Anode No.1).<BR>The anode potential during electrolysis at constant temperatures and current densities increased from 0.2V for primary nickel crystal to about 1.3V for sulfides in sulfate-chloride electrolyte.By X-ray analysis electrolytic anode surface transformed Ni3S2 into NiS.<BR>These facts may be considered to be due to the following reactions: Ni3S2-2e→2NiS+Ni++<BR>2NiS-4e→2Ni+++2S<BR>It was found that included nickel in anode slime decreases according to increased sulfur in sulfide anode. From these results of this study the sulfur content of nickel sulfide anodes may be required for above eutectic point.
