In this study the size-distribution and settling characteristics of primary slimes have been dealt with, being based on experiments on twelve samples from ten mines.<BR>The size distribution characteristics (weight and component distribution) of the slimes could be quantitatively represented using Rosin-Rammler-Bennett diagram, which led to the average size-distribution equation determined as:R=100·e-(d/50) 1.03<BR>where d represents the screen opening in micron and R represents the cumulative weight percent retained. It was also indicated that Al2O3 predominates in finer size-range, while S and SiO2 concentrating in coarser part.<BR>From settling curves obtained by experiments with sedimentation balance the degree of natural flocculation was estimated on each sample, being based on the amount of a dispersing agent required to accomplish “perfect dispersion state”. It was ascertained that Stokes-size distributions of finer part of the slimes in the perfect disperslon state are well suited to Rosin-Rammler funcfion.<BR>The positive correlation between the degree of natural flocculation and the contents of Al+++, Zn++, and SO4-- dissolved in prlmary siime PuIp was indictaed.<BR>As a conclusion, some suggestions were made to improve present practices in treating (especially in ciassifying) primary slimes in mineral dressing plants.
