Abstract
The constituent changes of roasted copper concentrates at the various points in the Herreshoff roasters at two copper smelters have been investigated by the differential thermal and chemical analyses. From the results of this studies the reactions in the roaster may be summarized as follows:<BR>Pyrite contained in the copper concentrates begins to decompose into pyrrhotite on the first hearth, after its completion pyrrhotite is oxidized mainly to magnetite until the sulfide sulfur decreases to about 10%, on the middle hearths, and residual sulfide approches to chalcopyrite, which is scarecely oxidized. When the sulfide sulfur has been reduced below 10% on the lower hearths, magnetite changes into hematite rapidly, chalcopyrite to copper oxide and copper ferrite.
