Abstract

For the case of blasting with one free face, the effects of the change in the shape of the stress wave on the dynamic stress distribution in rock were investigated. The results obtained are briefly shown below.
1) Regardless of the change in the shape of the stresss wave, the maximum value of the compressive stress near the free face decreases due to the existence of the free face, while that of the tensile stress increases.
2) The magnitude of the tensile stress caused by the Hopkinson effect decreases rapidly with the increase in the wave length.
3) Let's consider a plane in which the center of explosion is included and which is also perpendicular to the free face. Then, possible cracks produced in this plane may extend to the direction perpendicular to that in which the maximum tensile stress acts. The direction of such possible cracks has nothing to do with the change in the shape of the stress wave and they begin to start radially from the center of explosion. But, with the approach of the free face such cracks will be curved to the direction parallel to the free face and this tendency becomes more and more evident for the waves with larger rise time and shorter wave length.
