Description

The main purpose of this paper is to show in what terms and to what extent "New Age" movements can be considered the successor to the dissident youth movements of the 1960's, that is, the hippie counterculture and, more importantly here, the political movements of the neo-new left radicals. Despite the importance of this topic, as evidenced in the area of the scientific study of social movements ranging from the new left to new religions, it seems that students in the field of religious studies have failed to give it adequate attention. This paper examines the recently expanding movements of "Qi-gong" in Japan and predecessor movements of the 1970's as excellent examples of the theme. Special attention is given to the contexts of Japan's political-cultural scene in the time frame under discussion. What is called the process of "spiritualizing the left" is traced both on the personal and collective levels of the movements. The conclusion of this study suggests that it may be fruitful to give more consideration to findings in the field of NSM or "new social movement" studies, which seem to relate the emergence and some characteristic forms of "New Age" movements to the widely observed tendencies of "psychism" in the political movements of advanced countries in and after the 1960's.
