Description

The purpose of this research is to observe and analyze the process of self-transformation in the followers of a new religious institution. The Self-Narrative approach was employed to obtain insights into the reason tor such transformations. The research focuses on the Youth Speech Contest held annually by the new religious institution, Shinnyoen, whose teachings are basically derived from Buddhism. Through participant observation it was noted that a unique process of self narrative took place in the interaction among followers. Moreover, it was seen that the discourse of self narrative would consequently be taken as the ultimate or absolute truth by the individuals involved. This paper points out that self-alteration as well as the formation and confirmation of trust in the present rely on the mutually influenced relationship among members of Shinnnyoen.
