Description
Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is a method to clarify the mechanical behavior of a sample depending on temperature, load and frequency, and DMA can evaluate Young's modulus, storage modulus and loss modulus, damping and internal friction. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are expected to be new damping materials since SMAs are in general believed to possess large damping due to their stress-induced martensite transformation (SIMT) and/or reorientation of martensite variants. Details of damping properties of SMAs however, are still insufficiently studied under a large strain condition. In this paper, DMA was utilized for the characterization of shape memory behavior and damping properties of several Ti-Ni base SMAs containing platinum-group metals (PGMs) such as Rh and Ru. It was found that Rh addition reduces both Young's modulus and martensitic transformation temperatures of TiNi, and that Young's modulus is low around martensitic transformation temperatures. Besides, frequency dependence on internal friction was observed below martensite transformation finish temperature : internal friction becomes larger with lowering when martensite phase is stable. Moreover, PGM-added Ti-Ni SMAs commonly exhibit larger internal friction than binary TiNi. It is concluded that PGM-added TiNi SMAs can be applicable for damping uses and that DMA is a quite useful evaluation method for damping properties of SMAs.
