Description

Hat-shaped hollow structure is axially compressed under impact or quasi-static condition. The structure is composed of hat-shaped part and flat plate connected by spot-welding. Impact velocity is 10m/s. Test materials are mild steel and 3 kinds of high strength steel sheets. Computation of crush behavior is also performed using a dynamic explicit FEM, in which the spot welding is numerically considered. Simulated collapse patterns well agree with the experimental ones. The crush strength is larger for the shorter hat-height being consistent with the experimental result. In computation, the initial peak load is eliminated introducing the geometrical imperfection in the vicinity of the impacted edge. Impact oblique to the structural axis decreases the crush strength, even when the bending type collapse does not appear.
