Abstract
This paper deals with a plant water stress sensor using PVDF piezoelectric films. It is known that the acoustic emission (AE) occurs in the vessels when the plants such as tomatoes fall into a water-stress-state due to lack of water. PVDF piezoelectric films are discussed as a plant water stress sensor utilizing the characteristics of its flexibility. The sensor sensitivity to the AE signal generating on the small wood piece are measured for film area, thickness and the number of layer. Results are shown that the PVDF film area and adhesiveness to the object are most important for increasing sensors sensitivity. As it is hard for the films to adhere tightly to plant stem because of their damp, however, the different way using a thin metal plate with knife-edge parts is introduced as a simple sensor for detecting water-stress of tomatoes.
