Description

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Japanese college students’ autonomy in internship on their career selfefficacy. The study attempts to investigate whether Japanese college students’ autonomy in internship will have a significant positive effect on their career self-efficacy. The data were collected from the students who had participated in the summer internship program in the academic year 2012. The pre – and post – questionnaires were administered. Career self-efficacy for the study was considered as the following four types confidence: 1) confidence to adapt oneself to the changes of working environments; 2) confidence to make decisions by oneself at one’s turning point in one’s career; 3) confidence to manage to new jobs; 4) confidence to become the talented people who meet surrounding expectations even if one’s working environment changes. The results show that their career confidence after their internship trainings improved. It was also found that their autonomy under the internship trainings clearly had a positive influence on their career confidence as a result of multiple linear regression analysis. The findings provide important implications on career education and present interesting hypotheses for future research on internship and work integrated learning.
