説明

Minamata signifies not only the site of Minamata disease, but also myriads of meanings. Unfortunately, it is true that many people associate Minamata with negativities. Currently, Minamata, however, tries to overcome such negativities. For example, Minamata in Kumamoto attracts young people who come to know Minamata through various ways. These individuals find unique interpersonal and human-nature relationships in Minamata's daily lives. One media form which conveys complexity of Minamata is Kataribe, narrators in the Minamata Disease Museum. My encounter with the Kataribe, who practice communication as hermeneutic experience, forces me to consider what I am doing in the classroom. This paper tries to open up the horizon of communication education by examining what happens in the area of Minamata, Kumamoto.
