説明

The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate factors of intimacy including interpersonal attraction, self-disclosure and nonverbal behaviors and (2) to compare the correlations of these three factors between intra-cultural (Japanese with Japanese) and intercultural (Japanese with non-Japanese) friendships. This research analyzed 205 Japanese university students' relationships with both Japanese and foreign friends. The results of the analyses were as follows: Interpersonal attraction within intra-cultural friendship was higher and the period of the relationships was longer than that within intercultural friendship. Also, the amount of personal-topic and superficial-topic self-disclosure and the amount of sending-nonverbal and replying-nonverbal behavior in Japanese to Japanese friendships was more than that of Japanese to non-Japanese friendships. Intra-cultural friendships indicated higher reciprocity than intercultural friendships in personal-topic and superficial-topic self-disclosure and sending-nonverbal behavior while intercultural friendships showed higher reciprocity than intra-cultural friendships in replying-nonverbal behavior. Japanese to Japanese friendships showed a high correlation between personal-topic self-disclosure and interpersonal attraction while the correlation between superficial-topic self-disclosure and interpersonal attraction of Japanese to non-Japanese friendships was higher than intra-cultural friendships. On the other hand, it was common tendency that the correlation between replying-nonverbal behavior and interpersonal attraction was higher than sending-nonverbal behavior in both friendships. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated the amount of nonverbal behaviors between two parties affected interpersonal attraction more strongly than self-disclosure in intercultural friendships while the amount of self-disclosure between two parties affected interpersonal attraction more strongly than nonverbal behavior in intra-cultural friendships.
