Abstract

A technique was developed in which the light emission images of radicals, OH and CH, were visualized, even in a luminous flame or near-glowing bodies, by processing the monochromatic images of the flame at and in the neighborhood of the emission band of the radical. This was made by one or two interference optical filters and an image intensifier. The details of the technique were examined by spectroscopic observation of a Wolfhand-Parker flame, as well as by the computer simulation of the image processing. The accuracies of the emission images of radicals experimentally obtained were evaluated by comparing them with their counterparts estimated by simulation. It was found that this technique was applicable also to fluctuating flames, such as premixed spray flames or turbulent premixed flames, if time-averaging processes were involved.
