Abstract

The characteristics of binary gravity-flow film condensation on a vertical plate are experimentally investigated using R 113-R 114 and R 113-R 11 mixtures. The dependencies of the heat transfer coefficient on the bulk concentration of a more volatile component and the bulk-to-wall temperature difference are clarified. The pseudo-similar solution assuming independent heat resistances of the liquid film and vapor diffusion boundary layer can well predict the heat transfer coefficient, even in the case where the flow directions of two layers are different. The fin effects of the condensing surface on the heat transfer performance are also investigated. The heat transfer coefficients of binary vapor mixtures on a finned plate of 3 mm in height can be well estimated from the results of the flat plate condenser, by assuming that the diffusion boundary layer fully covers the finned surface.
