Memory is changeable but becomes fixed when it is written down. Put another way, memory at the point of writing, that is to say "the present in memory", greatly influences what is written. The present in memory appears as the structure and theme of the written text. Viewed in this light, although the texts of kambun diaries may be trusted as records of historical fact because of their daily format, they are just one of many 'written texts' created through "the present in memory".
