説明

In The Tale of Genji, almost fifty percent of the substantives followed by the sentence final "nari-keri" are the names of the characters, and those characters are mostly subsidiary or supporting role characters. In addition, "nari-keri" follows the words "waza" and "kokoro", and this fact was not found in the monogatari or diaries preceding The Tale of Genji, Among declinable words followed by "nari-keri", "omou" [think] and "obosu" [honorific version of "omou"] are prominent. These cases indicate that the sentence-final expression, "nari-keri", in The Tale of Genji can be considered a form of expression used to indicate the narrator's explanatory mode when introducing characters before they have formally appeared or inner thoughts which cannot be seen overtly.
