Abstract
<p><tt>In order to gain an understanding on the hazardous nature of heterogeneous reaction systemsin liquid-liquidphase toluene and benzene sulfonation by sulfuric acid was investigated using a reaction calorimeter(RC1). It was fomd that the exothermic behavior of sulfonation was inHuenced by the stirrlng efficiency viz.the interfacial tension,while it did not depend on the acid concentration. The maximum heat release rate was predicted by employing a mathematical relationship using Webemumber,in which the overa11reactiom’ate was assumed to be proportional to the size of the contact area between phases、The validity of the relationship was checked by comparing with the RCI experlmental results、It was found that the predicted heat rates </tt><tt>matched reasonably when the volumetric fraction of the dispersion phase was larger than O.1.</tt></p>
