We have developed a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser that operates at a low pump power. To prevent losses in the laser cavity, we produced 12.4 fs pulses at a pump power of 1.2 W with an output coupling of 6%. We have demonstrated a new cavity configuration for low-threshold mode locking, that includes two pairs of dispersion-compensation prisms in the cavity. Using this new cavity, 32-fs pulses were generated at a pump power of only 0.7 W.
