The performance of a Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with an optical window in front of the preionizer is described. The windows were made of LiF and SiO2. With the LiF window, a maximum laser output energy of 11.6 J/ l (6.2%) was obtained, which was almost the same as that obtained without the window (12.1 J/ l, 6.4%), from a discharge volume of 19 cm3. With the SiO2 window, lasing was not possible. The wavelength range of 110-160 nm was found to be effective for preionization.
