Current profile between a large scale metallic object and a small probe electrode has been studied with the conformal mapping method, in connection with electrochemical corrosion monitoring of the installations buried in soil. It was found that a non-polarizable electrode must be used as the probe for obtaining the information regarding the corrosion rate of a large scale buried installation. The net polarization resistance was obtained by considering the current profile. It was proved that the rate of corrosion of a long object such as pipeline can be estimated to some extent by measuring the net resistance between the object and a non-polarizable probe electrode. In the case of a circular object such as bottom plate of storage tank, however, the corrosion rate can be estimated only by measuring the electrochemical impedance using a one-side exposed probe electrode.
