Abstract
Raman scattering intensities of the C=O stretching vibration were measured for about sixty compounds. The intensities were determined relative to that of the C=C stretching, vibration of tetrachloroethylence. The obtained data were examined in view of the applications of them to the group type analysis. It was shown that the Raman intensities are constant for each of the types of compounds such as aliphatic esters, acrylates and metha crylates, aromatic esters, etc., and they are remarkably different among those types, while the corresponding infrared absorption intensities are kept constant over much wider range of compounds. The results indicate that when the conjugation effect including the C=O group exists, the marked enhancement of the Raman intensities is realized. These results suggest that the intensities of the νc=o bands have the possible utility for the determinations of the types of carbonyl compounds. Moreover, it was proved that the intensities are proportional to the numbers of C=O groups in a molecule within the same types of compounds. It was concluded that the obtained results give a useful guide to the group type analysis by Raman spectrometry.
