Abstract
Fundamentals and some topics of calcium carbonate and silica scales are reviewed with respect to nature of water. New saturation index different from the well-known Langelier Index is proposed to be utilized here. An interesting information is also introduced in which a trace amount of non-identified organic substance in natural water has an important role for formation of corrosion protective scaling film. Silica scaling becomes problem when water is concentrated as in the case of recirculating cooling water system. Scaling process through polymerization of silicic acid and composite film being formed with corrosion products are also reviewed.
