The effect of gas composition on the corrosion for stainless steels and Ni which are the candidate materials for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell hardware has been investigated in molten carbonate at 650°C. The following conclusion can be drawn. The corrosion rate of 316L increased with increasing fuel utilization because of increase in PCO2 in the fuel gas. The corrosion rate of 310S and 35Cr-45Ni alloy with high Cr content was not so accelerated by the fuel utilization. Ni showed excellent corrosion resistance even in 80% utilized fuel gas. In the oxidant gas the corrosion rate of stainless steels increased with increasing PCO2 as well as in the fuel gas. However, the effect was not so remarkable comparing with in the fuel gas. Oxygen promoted the formation of protective films and increased the cathodic reaction. Therefore, oxygen decreased the corrosion rate of stainless steels at high PO2, whereas, it accelerated the corrosion rate at low PO2.
