Chemical/electrochemical aspects of hot corrosion of metals and alloys were reviewed with an emphasis on solid electrolyte sensors. Phase stability diagram was constructed for the fused sodium sulfate melt at 1173K, based on the acid-base nature of the melt. Emphasis was placed on the dissolution reaction of major oxide scales in the melt. Cathodic reactions in the melt as well as reaction traces for the hot corrosion of preoxidized nickel were demonstrated for an example. Roles of vanadate/chromate anions on hot corrosion were referred in terms of dissolution reaction of protective oxide scale and cathodic reaction in the melt.
