Description

In order to study the role of deformation structure in stress corrosion cracking of Type 304 stainless steel in boiling MgCl2 solution, effect of prestrain on crack propagation rate and optical micrographic observation of crack tips were examined.
The crack propagation rate increased in approximately the following ascending order: 0%, 30%, 10% prestrained specimen. These prestrained specimens showed considerable difference in plastic deformation behaviour, and particularly in 10% prestrained specimen localised plastic deformation was observed. On the other hand, the striations which expressed the strain induced martensite or the region of high dislocation density were found near the crack tips.
It is thought that the region of high dislocation density in Type 304 stainless steel could enhance the crack propagation in boiling MgCl2 solution.
