A method is presented for compensating astigmatism in a Seya-Namioka monochromator by placing a concave mirror in front of the monochromator. It is shown analytically that there are a number of ways to arrange a monochromator, concave mirror, and a light source so as to eliminate the astigmatism at one wavelength and that the nonastigmatic wavelength can easily be changed by merely altering the locations of the mirror and light source relative to the monochromator. Numerical examples of the arrangement parameters are presented graphically.<BR>Experiments were performed in the ultraviolet region for some arrangements using a 50cm Seya-Namioka monochromator and a concave mirror having the radius of curvature of 80 cm. The results showed the usefulness of the method: (1) nonastigmatic spectral images of the light source were formed at the exit slit of the monochromator over a wide range of the wavelength by the use of the concave mirror and (2) the output power from the monochromator slit was increased appreciably, say, a factor of 5, with the mirror.
