Recently, endovascular therapy with microcoils and stents has started for the treatment of aneurysmal diseases. This study explores assessments of stent characteristics for pipe flows with a model of an aneurysmal sac in vitro. The operating fluid is the water, and three kinds of stents are adopted in the range of Reynolds number in human blood flows. As assessment parameters for stent characteristics, the pipe friction coefficient for the stent is considered as well as fineness and thickness of the stent mesh. The velocity fields within the aneurysmal model have been measured by means of PIV, and the distributions of shear stress and flow patterns have been investigated. The results have indicated that stents with the finer or the thinner meshes, or stents with the smaller pipe friction coefficient have blockage effects against flows into the aneurysmal model.
