Abstract
The present study aims to conduct fundamental research on the electrodes for alkali metal thermoelectric converters (AMTEC). The AMTEC utilizing β"-alumina solid electrolytes is a thermally regenerative electrochemical device for the direct conversion of heat to electric energy. Voltage versus current characteristics have been measured on various electrodes. Thin, porous molybdenum electrodes deposited by magnetron sputtering have achieved the highest power density of 0.34 W/cm2 at 1075 K, which is 65% of the theoretical value. The effects of internal resistance are discussed in detail.
