Field emission from a standalone open-ended carbon nanotube has been investigated. The open-ended nanotube, which was prepared by overcurrent cutting of a multiwalled nanotube followed by the extraction of thin inner layers, consists of a single layer at the tip. The field-emission microscopy image shows a daisylike pattern with twelve bright stripes. This is discussed in terms of the interference of electron beams from carbon atoms or localized sites on an open-ended ring and the difference in the magnification of emission sites between the circumference and the radial direction. A standing wave along the circumference is proposed as the origin of the emission sites.
