Antibacterial action was examined in vitro and in vivo on cefoxitin, a new antibiotic of the cephamycin group.<BR>Results of studies showed that cefoxitin possessed a broad antibacterial spectrum against both Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria and that cefoxitin was superior to conventional cephalosporins tested against species of indole producing Proteus (P. vulgaris, P. morganii, P. rettgeri and P. inconstans) and Serratia, against which cephalosporins in general are weak in their activities. It was also shown that cefoxitin exhibited a favorable activity against strains of E. coli and Klebsiella. Its activity against Grampositive bacteria, however, was inferior to those of the cephalosporins.<BR>In in vivo experiments, cefoxitin exhibited a better curative effect than did cefazolin in experimental animal infections with Serratia.<BR>Superior results were obtained, on the contrary, by cefazolin in cases of similar experiments with Staph. aureus, E. coli and Proteus mirabilis which were revealed to be less sensitive to cefoxitin than to cefazolin.
