抄録

1. In-vitro antibacterial activity:<BR>The minimal inhibitory concentration of mezlocillin was tested by an agar plate dilution method. The MIC of mezlocillin against 60 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from otorrhoea was between 0.39 to 50μg/ml, with a peak at 3.13μg/ml. The MIC against 60 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 6.25 to ≥ 100μg/ml of mezlocillin, showing its peak at 50μg/ml.<BR>2. Blood concentration:<BR>The average blood concentration of mezlocillin in healthy adults after i. v. administration of 500 mg was 20 μg/ml 15 minutes after injection. Even after 4 hours, clinically effective serum concentration of 0.5μg/ml was still demonstrable.<BR>3. Tissue concentration:<BR>Mezlocillin activity was demonstrable at the concentration of 1.7 to 3.2μg/ml in tissues of human maxillary sinus mucous membrane after one hour of intravenous injection of 500 mg.<BR>At the same time, the serum concentration of mezlocillin was 3.2 to 6.5μg/ml.<BR>4. Results of clinical treatment:<BR>Mezlocillin was injected intravenously to 20 cases of representative infections in the otorhinolaryngologic field.<BR>Results were excellent in 14 cases, good in 4 cases, fair in 1 case and poor in 1 case. When the case in which it was excellent and good were considered together, the ratio of effectiveness was 90 per cent.<BR>5. Side effects:<BR>No side effects were observed in these 20 cases.<BR>The comparison of findings on liver function tests, electolytes and audiogram carried out before and after treatment showed no significant differences.
