Description
TSDC analysis of nylon with different balance of end groups (fN; amino group fraction) confirms the existence of αρ, α, β and γ relaxations. We found a well resolved αρ relaxation previously detected only as a strong upswing by mechanical relaxation analysis and that two distinct relaxations for nylon rich in carboxyl end groups appear in that region. Two different relaxation mechanisms each for α and β relaxations were found. The former tend to merge into a single mechanism as fN increases, and with the presence of water in polymer, the two relaxation mechanisms merge into a single mechanism for α and β relaxations. Even in the presence of water, the α relaxation for nylon rich in carboxyl end groups still follows two different mechanisms. Study on the interaction of water with the polymer confirmed that the molecular chains in the amorphous region of nylon 66 rich in amino end groups show strong mutual interaction, hence exhibiting stability against water attack.
