Finding of columnar phases of a thermotropic-liquid crystalline polypeptide.

It is shown that the polymer (NHCH[CH 2 CH 2 CO 2 H]CO) x -(NHCH[CH 2 CH 2 COO(CH 2 ) 6 OPhOCH 3 ]CO) y after making spontaneous orientation in a thin X-ray glass capillary is in columnar mesophase both in crystalline and liquid crystalline states. The molecular packing is rectangular in crystalline state and hexagonal in liquid crystalline state to better pack the polymer helices with alkyl side chains which are stiff, extending perpendicular to the polymer helix in the former state and flexible in the latter state.
