Abstract

This paper presents the vibration reduction approach of a string-mass system, that is, a concentrated mass placed on the middle of a string, by controlling the string tension. The string tension can be determined from the displacement and velocity feedback. The restoring force by the string tension is equivalently represented by the spring, so that this system can be considered as a semiactive control of variable stiffness type. Since the stiffness variation is limited in the actual system, the numerical example investigates the effect of lower and upper limits on the vibration characteristics. Experimental results show good agreements with the numerical results, and it is found that the method presented in this paper is effective for vibration reduction.
