Description

Systematic studies have been made on the recovery and purification of dicyclopentadiene from the C5-fraction of the vaporphase-steam-cracked naphtha. The liquid-phase thermal polymerization of cyclopentadiene in C5-fraction is believed to be a reaction of the second order, and the reaction kinetics are similar to those as in cases with organic solvents, but it has been indicated that the selective dimerization of cyclopentadiene is markedly affected by the codimerization of cyclopentadiene with isoprene which is present in C5-fraction. It was also confirmed that yellow coloration of crude dicyclopentadiene was due to the thermal decomposition of peroxides accumulated during the atmospheric distillation of the thermally treated C5-fraction.
