抄録

Studies on the liquefaction of bituminous coal and lignite were made by employing as catalysts various kinds of complex oxides containing iron or molybdenum. Hydrocracking was performed using, as model substances of coal, diphenylmethane, diphenyl ether, and benzyl phenyl ether. To test the acidity and the hydrogenation activity of a catalyst, dehydration of 2-propanol and hydrogenation of naphthalene were carried out.
It was concluded that, based on the correlation between the activity for diphenylmethane and that for 2-propanol (Fig. 3) and on the correlation between the activity for benzyl phenyl ether and that for naphthalene (Fig. 4), the acidic properties of the catalyst played an important role in the C-C bond cleavage, and the hydrogenation activity of the catalyst played an important role in the C-O bond cleavage.
This conclusion was found to fit the results of liquefaction of bituminous coal of 83.0% carbon content and that of lignite of 72.3% carbon content. Namely highly acidic catalysts exhibited high activities for liquefaction of bituminous coal (Table 2), whereas catalysts possessing high hydrogenation ability showed high activities for liquefaction of lignite containing a large amount of oxygen (Table 4).
To prepare efficient catalysts for coal liquefaction, such factors, in addition to acidity and hydrogenation activity, as pore and particle sizes, support, complexing, and additive effects should be taken into consideration.
