Description

A new simple method is proposed to solve the flash distillation and equilibrium partial condensation problems of multicomponent systems where the external heat duty of a heat exchanger is specified.
The schematic flow diagram of the unit is shown in Fig. 1, and the mass and enthalpy balance equations are given in Eqs. (1) to (3).
The algorithm of the method consists of only a correction loop of the liquid composition based on the normalized θ method4), as shown in Eqs. (10) and (11), and is characterized by having no constraint from ratios, β and β', of vapor and liquid rates to feed rate. However, in spite of the simplicity of the algorithm compared with others1)-3), the results (Tables 4, 5) of the numerical examples given in Table 1 prove that the method is valid not only for ideal system but also for non-ideal system.
It is also easily understood that the proposed method can be applied to the adiabatic flash distillation calculations by setting the heat duty Q in Eq. (3) equal to zero.
