One-year-old rooted cuttings of rabbiteye blueberries were grown in flowing solution cul-ture maintained at pH 3, 4 and 5 for 46 days to examine effects of N forms on growth. The solutions were kept at these pHs by automatic titration with 0.1 N H2SO4 or NaOH. N was supplied at 14 mg-liter-1 as NH4+ or NO3-.<BR>NH4+-fed plants had greater dry weight of young leaves and stems than did NO3--fed ones at pHs 3 and 4, but N forms had no effect on dry weight at pH 5. Dry weight of young leaves and stems was greater at pHs 3 and 4 than at pH 5 in NH4+-fed plants, but it was not changed by pH in NO3--fed plants. At pH 5, NH4+-fed plants accumulated much solu-ble N, amide-N, and free NH4+ in young leaves. The concentrations of these N fractions in roots changed little with pH. P/Fe ratios in young leaves were significantly increased with an increase in pH, but the ratios were not affected by N forms.<BR>The above result indicates that the optimum pH ranges for rabbiteye blueberries were de-pendent on N forms supplied, and NH4+ was the best N source when solution pH was regu-lated between 3 to 4.
