Abstract
During the past 2 years, Aspiration Biopsy Cytology (A. B. C.) was performed in 76 patients with breast diseases; 44 cases were breast cancers and 32 were benign lesions (23; mastopathy, 4; fibroadenoma, 3; phyllodes tumor, 2; mastitis). The results were as follows.
1) True positive rate of 75.0% for the breast cancer was satisfactory and almost the same as reported by other authors.
2) False negative rate of 20.5% was higher, as compared with other publications. Small lesions, non-invasive and scirrhous carcinoma were the reasons for cytological misinterpretation.
3) True negative and suspicious rates for benign lesions were 68.8% and 25.0%, respectively.
4) False positive rate of 6.3% was considered to be favorable. It suggested that A. B. C. was a reliable method in the correct diagnosis of breast cancer.
We conclude that A. B. C. should be indicated as a principal modality for the suspicious lesions of the breast.
