Abstract

Orthopedic aspect of some intractable diseases in children including osteochondro-dysplasia, congenital anomaly (defect) of the extremities, and neuromuscular diseaes besides the specific diseases prescribed by the government were explained. In osteogenesis imperfecta, the author has employed the treatment for severe osteoporosis by administration of bisphosphonate, the treatment for deformed long tubular bones by correction osteotomy, and bearing the body weight on the extrrmities by physiotherapy. These comprehensive treatment are necessary for the patients to gain and to maintain good bone quality, which will further improve the patient's motor functions. On the other hand, in the patients with xerodermia pigmentosum, especially in Type A, about 65% of the cases have progressive cavovarus feet, which will hinder from standing and walking ability. From a 20-year personal experience, the patient's prognosis and their remaining days of life have been markedly improved by the surgical correction of the foot deformity, in addition to pediatric, rehabilitational, oto-rhino-laryngeal treatment and care.
