Description

The present paper is to report 6 cases of ostitis fibrosa localisata that were hospitalized in the National Chiba Hospital since 1949. Ages of these cases were from 9 to 24. Four cases were male and 2 were female.
Generally, ostitis fibrosa localisata develops at long tubular bones. In 2 cases the location was at femur, in another 2 cases at tibia, in another 1 case at humerus and in the remaining 1 case at calcaneus bone.
Spontaneous fractures were found in 4 cases, and by this the diagnosis was quite easy. Before the fractures these patients had no subjective complaints.
Two cases had previously direct trauma at the affected locations of bones. Etiology of ostitis fibrosa localisata is not yet known. There is, however, a suggestion that the disease may develop subsequent to chronic trauma, for instance, during the development of skeletal system some loadings or irritations may give stress to the certain bones and produce the disease. Labolatoric examinations, especially, serum Ca content tests were normal in these cases. Thus, this is not a general disease and the etiological difference between ostitis fibrosa generalisata will be obvious.
Therapeutically, curettage of the affected bones and transplantations of bone grafts were conducted. We feel that these measures are the best managements for the disease. Without the transplantation, there will be recurrences. As for the bone grafts, auto-bone-grafts are the best. There is also a consideration for the method of making grafts by homogeneous bone. Radiological radiation was not always effective. Incidentally, some author reported the development of malignant new growth subsequent to the radiation.
