Anabolic steroids were given to the far advanced pulmonary tuberculous patients with multiple cavities and positive tubercle bacilli in sputa. Daily dosis of 20mg of oxymetholone (HMD) were given to one female and 9 male patients, 6mg of 17α-ethylestrenol (EHE) to one female and 9 male patients and the placebo to 5 male patients for 18 weeks. They were all given the antituberculous drugs and aminoacid preparation.<br>Nitrogen balance (Fig. 1) showed positive results in both HMD and EHE group after the administration. Body weight was increased at 4 weeks after the administration (Fig. 2, Table 1) and thereafter the increasing rate was lower (wearing off phenomenon). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was much improved after a month (Fig. 3), and after the cessation of steroids it became faster again.<br>Serum cholesterol level was lowered markedly in both groups (Fig. 4, Table 2). BSP retention after 30 min (Fig. 5, Table 3) was increased during the treatment and recovered to normal value 2 weeks after the cessation. Serum GOT and GPT activities were increased in 4 patients in HMD group and 4 patients in EHE group, but none in the placebo group (Table 4). PZM or 1314TH which might induce the liver damage did not show such a high frequency of liver damage in tuberculous patients. HMD and EHE increased slightly the basal metabolic rate (Fig. 6).<br>In the present series of experiments there were no definite tendency in the balance of Ca and P, hemoglobin content, RBC, WBC, serum and urinary Na, K, Cl, creatine and creatinine, urinary 17-KS and 17-OHCS, and the blood sugar level.<br>Roentogenographic examination of the chest showed the slight improvement in one patient and the aggravation in one patient of HMD group, and two improved cases and one aggravated case in EHE group, but no change was seen in the placebo group. In both HMD and EHE group the tuberclebacilli in sputa disappeared in each two patients, but were always positive in control group.<br>As the sids effects the liver damage, headache, abnormal taste in the mouth, gynecomastia, acne, hoarseness, hirsutism, etc. were noticed (Table 5). Number of the side actions was more in HMD group than EHE group, because the dosis were greater in HMD group. Appetite and weakness were improved.
