This paper studies a semi active suspension system for ground vehicles using an electro rheological fluid damper as a continuously modulated damper. An experimental setup of the single degree-of-freedom vehicle suspension system has been made for analyzing vibration isolation characteristics. The strength of the ER damper force is continuously modulated by a high voltage power supply. In this paper, it is proposed to design two types of feedback controllers in order to get the vibration isolation characteristics similar to a sky-hook damper system. One is the inverse model controller, the other is the model following controller which is designed using LQR design method. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control system can be effective for vibration isolation of the vehicle body.
