Abstract

The appearance and localization of cytochrome oxidase in hamster eggs during folliculogenesis and early developmental stages were investigated ultracytochemically (according to the method of SELIGMAN et al.) and histochemically (according to the method of BURSTONE). The results obtained were as follows. (1) In electron microscopic preparations the reaction product, seen as dense deposits of osmium-containing granules, was found in the outer compartment between inner and outer mito-chondrial membranes and in the intracristate spaces of mitochondria. (2) In light microscopic prep-arations the reaction for cytochrome oxidase was present in the cytoplasm of oocytes and early em-bryos. The enzyme activity was weak in oocytes from primordial follicles, but was strong in oocytes from secondary follicles and in ovulated eggs, in one-cell stage to the blastocyst stage.
