Description

The accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis in sows by ultrasonic linear electronic scanning and by esti-mation of plasma progesterone was compared. A total of 927 sows were included in this experiment.
Pregnancy status was correctly diagnosed by ultrasonic linear electronic scanning from day 22 of gestation through term, both in sows with normal and very small litter size. Time required for diagnosis was very short. On the other hand, plasma progesterone levels were significantly different between pregnant and non-pregnant sows 17 to 21 days after breeding. At this period of time, it would be possible to diagnose pregnancy. This could allow rebreeding of non-pregnant sows which may be returning to heat. However, the estimation of plasma progesterone requires special laborato-ry facilites and considerable time per sows.
By this study, the ultrasonic linear electronic scanning proved to be simple, rapid, and accurate method of pregnancy diagnosis in sows in field conditions.
