Fertilized rat eggs on day 5 of pregnancy were transferred into the uteri of synchronous pseudopregnant recipient rats. In the hormone treated groups, the recipients were in jected subcutaneously daily with 1 mg progesterone, 1 mg progesterone plus 0.25 or 0. 5 μg of estrone from day 5 to day 19. The proportion of the number of implantation sites to the number of eggs transferred was 94/160 (58. 8%) in the control and 46/51 (90.2%) in the 1 mg progesterone plus 0.5 μg estrone group. The proportion of viable fetuses was 6. 9% in the control and 21. 9% in 1 mg of the progesterone plus 0.25 μg of estrone group. Furthermore, the proportion of surviving fetuses (number of viable fetuses/number of implants x 100) was 11.7 in the control and 25.9% in the progesterone plus estrone group. The proportion of surviving fetuses in the 1 mg progesterone plus 0. 25 μg estrone was significantly higher than the control.<BR>These results indicate that the combined progesterone-estrone treatment after the egg transfer in the rat is especially effective for improvement of the final survival rate of transferred eggs, and that the improvement is caused by increase of both the rate of implantation and the prenatal survival rate.
