The effects of 50 IU PMSG and 50 IU HCG on ovulation, recovery rate of ova, development of ova, implantation and fetal mortality in the adult rat were studied. The concentrations of serum progesterone and prolactin were estimated during first half of pregnancy in the superovulated rat.
All of the gonadotropins-treated animals were induced superovulation and copulated. Mean num-ber of ovulated ova of treated rats was about threefold that of control ones.
Recovery rates of ova on day 4 and 5 of pregnancy in the treated rats were very low (21.8 and 7.6%, respectively), compared with those of control rats (67.7 and 86.2%, respectively). Most of the ova recovered were developed to morula on day 4 and to blastocyst on day 5 of pregnancy.
The implantation rate of the treated animals was lower (24.6%) than that of control ones (91.9%) and the size of implantation site of the treated rats was significantly smaller than that of control ones. The estimated loss of the ova before implantation was about 75%, and the percentage viability on day 21 of pregnancy was only 0.7 in the treated rats.
Large vesicular ovarian follicles were recognized during their pregnancy.
The serum progesterone and prolactin levels of superovulated rats were higher than those of con-trol during first half of pregnancy.
In conclusion, it was suggested that the main factor of disturbance of pregnancy in the treated animals was unbalance of hormone secresion of ovary and/or unbalance in the pituitary-ovarian system.
The authors acknowledge the gift of rat prolactin radioimmunoassay materials to the Rat Pitui-tary Hormone Distribution Program of the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases.
